  • Weekday Replay for 1/21/12

We’ve been pretty lazy when it comes to keeping up with this post where we recap what we’ve put out there during the week. I feel it’s high time we get back to that. There’s some great stuff going on behind the scenes as well as what you see here, with more to come next week!

On Monday, Adam tells us why Fitocracy might be the geekiest way to a healthier lifestyle.

On Tuesday Dan shared some old school maps and sky charts as the latest addition to our Weekly Wallpapers.

On Wednesday Jimmy checked out one of the Lego boardgames, but is this one Heroic enough?

On Thursday we were sadly absent from posting. Shame on us.

On Friday I posted the first entry in a new site-wide project where we’re keeping track of the movies we watch this year. Feel free to join in!

For our random old post this week we want to remind you how good the card game Yomi is.

Have a great weekend everybody! We’ll see you next week with Episode #00043 of our podcast, among other things.

Jab: Realtime Boxing Card Game Review

Jab: Real Time Boxing - Header ImagePersonally, I don’t understand the sport of boxing. It’s not that I can’t follow what’s going on in the ring or why people enjoy watching it. No, it’s more that I don’t understand why people would want to participate in a sport where the goal is to limit the amount you get beat up. Getting punched in the head at work is not something I’ll ever find myself interested in doing. All that said I really like boxing videogames and LOVE movies about the punch-happy sport. Hell, I’ve lived all my life across the river from where Rocky was filmed. I’ve run up the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I’ve ate lightning and crapped thunder!

To say that I’ve never played a tabletop game based on boxing is a lie, I owned Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots like any other child of my era worth their salt in having good toy taste. It’s definitely suffice to say that I’ve never played a tabletop card game based on boxing. Let alone one that’s played in real time. Hit the jump and I’ll explain some more.

    Puzzle Strike (Board Game Review)

As someone fairly new to the world of board games, I’m afraid that I have to admit that I’ve never played Dominion.  In fact, I’ve never played a deck building game at all.  Puzzle Strike has served as my entry into this particular sub-genre of gaming, and for the most part, it’s been a welcoming experience.  With simple rules, quick gameplay, plenty of variety, and the fun of playing with chips instead of cards, it almost seems like the perfect entry point for those looking to delve into the world of deck building – almost.

Loosely inspired by the video game Puzzle Fighter, players will receive gems on each turn that they can try to combine and “crash” into their opponent’s playing field.  The object of the game is to destroy your opponent by filling their field with 10 or more gems, thus ending the game.  In case you’re not familiar with Puzzle Fighter, think of the gems as your falling blocks in Tetris.  Once you have 10 or more of them, the screen fills up and its game over.

    Flash Duel (board game review)

David Sirlin has become something of a maverick in the world of competitive games over the last few years.  Puzzle Strike managed to recreate the experience of Capcom’s Puzzle Fighter in a tabletop experience, complete with its own set of Street Fighter-style characters.  Yomi brought those same characters into a rock-paper-scissor style card battle.  And wedged neatly in between those two releases was Flash Duel, a card game that brought Sirlin’s Fantasy Strike fighters back, albeit in a somewhat simpler fashion.

The basics in Flash Duel are incredibly straight-forward.  Each player is represented by a wooden pawn, and at the start of the game these pawns occupy opposite ends of numbered board.  In your hand are five cards, each of which features a number from 1 thru 5 on it.  Players will use these cards to move, attack, defend, and push.

Ep #00029: Perpetual Geek Machine Podcast

It really bummed us out to take an unexpected week off, but I gotta tell ya listeners I think we came back harder and better than ever.

Then we talk Portal 2 next gen iPad articles, Street Fighting card game Yomi, WWI alt-universe tower defense meets mech-mayhem Trenched, Game of Thrones (spoiler-free) and more… and that’s before we even take our break!

    Listen, and listen good!
Here’s the link to give Perpetual Geek Machine: Show #00029 a listen!

Let’s Play! Yomi (Card game review)

Imagine taking your favorite fighting game and making it a card game, wouldn’t that be awesome? Well, you don’t have to do a shred of work to make that possibility a reality cause Sirlin games already has it covered with the competitive card fighting game Yomi.

Yomi means “reading” in Japanese, as in to read your opponent, and that’s pretty much the main mantra of the game. Anticipate your opponent to set up dodges, throws and attacks to drain them of hit points. There are super moves, power ups, combos, the works.

In addition to all that Yomi is also one more thing actually – it’s one of the best games I’ve played this year… easily. Let’s take a look at how it all works.
