If you remember reading my review of Voodoo #1 you already know two things: I had no previous knowledge of Voodoo before the relaunch and I really hated the seemingly shallow character and setting. To me this first issue represented a lot of what I don’t like about comics which mostly revolves around poor female characters. The argument and conversations concerning this topic aren’t new but they’re still happening which means that a problem still exists to some extent. In my view comics like Voodoo were perpetuating the overly sexualized and shallow female characters that run all too rampant.
A single issue, about 20 pages, is not a lot of space to delve too deep into developing a character. A couple of our readers who were much more familiar with Voodoo had commented on my review and made a case that there was definitely more to her than what there seemed. Of course, I didn’t think that what was laid out in that first issue was everything so I recently went back and picked up issue #2 through the current #6 to check things out for myself. (more…)
Full disclosure: I know fuck all about Voodoo. To the point that I didn’t even know she was a character that existed in any universe. So when DC relaunches the series as part of The New 52 this is the perfect time to start learning myself about her, right?
Here’s the thing: I’ve now read Voodoo #1 and here’s the summation of what I know about Voodoo: She’s a stripper who shape-shifts into some sort of monster/alien/thing. I also know that I probably won’t be reading Voodoo #2.

Speaking strictly for us here at Perpetual Geek Machine, this whole DC New 52 thing has been a rousing success. While each of us enjoys comic books in an abstract way we just don’t tend to read them month to month, and as such have only dabbled. We’re more fans of the few times a year trade paperbacks. So a reboot has been just what the doctored for us, and we’ve jumped in with both feet to try out some of the new books. Hot on the heels of last week’s look at Detective Comics #1 we’re back with a title that focuses on another Gotham City resident in Catwoman #1.
