  • A look at the Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes of the Feywild options book

No matter what flavor of Dungeons and Dragons you play, the game is rooted in fantasy. I’m willing to bet that most of us were introduced to the world of fantasy in the same way, through Fairy Tales told to us when we were tiny children.

Witches casting spells on innocent little girls. Magical beasts frolic in mythical forests. Animal monsters prowl the countryside looking for a tasty meal. Players Option: Heroes of the Feywild capitalizes on these themes beautifully.

I will admit, for the longest time when I heard ‘Feywild’ I would just think fairies and cuteness, but flipping through the introductory chapter really got my creative juices flowing with awesome ideas for both characters and adventures.

The book serves to give the player more options to creating a compelling character, similar to the Heroes of Shadow book that came out a few months back. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

Gallery: Haunted Temples Dungeons and Dragons map pack

This is a first for me, and I think as a product for WotC, at least in 4th edition. They’ve been releasing dungeon tile sets to help people build their own layouts with various themes (see our Witchlight Fens gallery here) and then the pre-made adventures typically come with some large foldout maps as well.

Today though we’re taking a look at a pack of those large 21X30 inch foldout maps, 3 double-sided layouts in all. Some of them are totally new, others have long been out of print. If you’ve been looking for a broken down cathedral/cemetery or other haunts to place your characters, you may want to give this one a look. As usual they’re crazy detailed, can be fit into any campaign, and you get 3 sheets (6 maps total).

Sorry for the glare, was tough to get such a large shot at once, and I don’t have any plastic to flatten them out right this second. Enjoy the gallery.

It’s Time You Had Someone Teach You, Tichu.

It’s been a while since I hunkered down with a good “traditional,” card game. Outside of losing a few games of Euchre during the summer, I haven’t sat and played Crazy Eights or Rummi for quite some time, so I was looking forward to getting into the game Tichu, from Rio Grande Games.

After some quick Wikipedia research, I find out the game looks like a variant of two Chinese card games: Choi Dai Di, which is Hong Kong slang that means “Step On the Little Guy,” (nice!); and Da Lao Er, Mandarin slang for, and I’m not making this up…”Big Penis.” With a lineage like that, this game should be big fun.

Roll for Alien Abductions in Martian Dice!

A few months ago we took a look at the simple to play and easy to transport cup of dice game Zombie Dice from Steve Jackson Games. In it you play as zombies and roll different dice to try and eat as many brains as you can before getting shotgunned to death (so to speak, you are a zombie after all).

It’s a crazy simple game, plays up to however many people you have and is nice and portable which makes it great for both downtime at a con or even at the bar with friends.

Well, Tasty Minstrel Games has a new dice game that takes the basic premise of Zombie Dice and adds a nice twist to it, making it ever so slightly more complex and (we think) fun to play. Instead of zombies you play as martians, and instead of eating brains you’re trying to scoop up as many earthly inhabitants as possible

The Simpsons Paradox (Treehouse of Horror or Simpsons Clue?)

Over the last couple of weeks, I have had two very different encounters with the world’s greatest animated family. With it being Hallowe’en (side note: I still spell Hallowe’en with the apostrophe. I’m a purist), I allowed myself to look past my increasing apathy towards the Simpsons, and give my favorite yellow characters (except That Yellow Bastard, from Sin City), another try and check out the latest Hallowe’en “Treehouse of Horror,” episode.

Consequently, while preparing for another board-game broo-ha-ha with some of my local besties, I grabbed The Simpsons’ Clue, because one of our group has Clue on the short list of games she will actually play. Besides, since it’s the Simpson’s version of a classic board game, it’s inherently fun, right? I just didn’t realize how much more I’d enjoy the board game than the show.

Walking Dead Board Game: A Game With This Many Dice Should Be More Fun.

I’m not going to lie: I’m still not sick of zombies. Even with all the video games, comics, movies, and TV Series, I’m still not sick of them. Not even Zombieland put me off them. And I really hated that movie. For whatever reason though, I’ve never read a single word of “The Walking Dead,” and I’ve only seen the first two episodes of the TV series (which I loved), but I was really excited when presented with the opportunity to play the new “Walking Dead,” board game, I jumped at the chance. It’s a board game based on the most successful modern zombie franchise out there, so what could go wrong?

    Weekday Replay 10/22/11

October is quickly drawing to a close, and before you know it we’ll be in the full swing of the holiday season. While I personally don’t enjoy the freezing weather that’s right around the corner there’s just no getting around it…. Winter Is Coming.

But let’s stave off that feeling of dread by reliving the past week on Perpetual Geek Machine!

On Monday we reviewed the terrible movie with a “message” Birdemic: Shock and Terror.

On Tuesday we took a look at the awesomely depressing see through card game Gloom.

On Wednesday we posted episode #00036 of our bi-weekly podcast.

On Thursday we reviewed the prequel to the John Carpenter horror classic The Thing.

On Friday we took a look at Voodoo #1, one of the new comics under DC’s “New 52″ line. We did not like it.

And now, you’re blast from the past link! (Something old on the site that we think you might like!)

Here’s our review of the offense based card drafting game Nightfall. Werewolves, Vampires and Demons… oh my!

    Gloom Card Game Review

Gloom card game ReviewCreepy clans conduct conspicuous capers causing character casualties. The torture transmitted to thyself today translates to triumphant time thereafter.

In other words, the world of Gloom is a dark, gothic place where miserable families lead miserable lives hoping for a miserable death. It’s thought that the darker and more pathetic a person’s current life is the more joyous their afterlife will be. It is up to you to drag your clan members through as many dark and depraved events as possible.
