  • The Unstoppable Gorg review

You could be forgiven for not knowing about the gigantic solar war that took place in the 1940s. Most of it happened in space.

I am of course referring to the defence of Earth’s massive stellar satellite system, which was mercilessly attacked on the outer edges of Pluto, first by the Gorg inhabitants of the mysterious Planet X, and then later joined by the bloodthirsty Brain Riders of Venus, led by the treacherous and beautiful Sereia.

In The Unstoppable Gorg, you control the actions of Captain Adam Huxley, who is manifested as nothing more than a mouse cursor, as he takes on the teeming endless hordes attacking the various Earth space stations. Yes, it’s tower defence, although much like Anomaly: Warzone Earth, it adds a surprising and worthwhile twist on the old formula, while keeping the Flash Gordon/Ed Wood pulp sci-fi cheese amplified to level 11.

Bendis shows us his full moon in the comic “Moon Knight”

I’m not going to lie; Brian Michael Bendis is definitely responsible for a percentage of my economic instability. After 10 years of not buying comics, I bought the first couple of issues of his run writing Daredevil in 2001, and I was hooked. From there I tried to buy as much of his stuff as my meager means would allow. I wasn’t reading a ton of comics, but more often than not when I did, they had the Bendis name on them. Then I got a car, and that was the end of that. Fortune however, is on my side, since my car is now paid for and Bendis has just started writing Marvel’s new Moon Knight series.

Now, there’s going to be a some comic readers that aren’t going to be too familiar with the Moon Knight character. That makes perfect sense. To be honest, neither am I. Moon Knight is like, a third level Avenger. Let me put it this way: If the Avengers were the Peanuts gang, Moon Knight would be Shermy. He would be playing a shepherd in the Avengers’ Christmas Pageant. He has had previous series and whenever he’s popped up with cameo appearances or whatever he has always been kind of a cool character that was intriguing to me. That could be because of the basic similarities to Batman, I don’t know; but it has been a very long time since he’s had any kind of spotlight thrown his way.

Let’s Play! Eleminis (card game review)

Earthly elements have long played a role in card games, whether we’re talking Magic: The Gathering or Pokemon.  But while water, fire, air and rock types in those titles tend to represent symbolic groupings, there aren’t too many games out there that simply address the blunt force of these elements.  In the simplest way possible, Eleminis has stepped up to fill this void.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (movie review)

Nearly thirty years ago, the toy company Hasbro released a line of action figures called Transformers. Since then, Michael Bay has made three movies based on the toys clocking in at a combined time of a little more than seven and a half hours, nearly all of which are complete shit. I’ve never been Michael Bay’s biggest supporter and I’ve tried to enjoy his movies for the special effects fests that they are, but to do so with this series is an act of futility. Though admittedly “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is a more enjoyable experience than its predecessor, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” that is in no way is a compliment to this movie.

Let’s Play! Yoomi with Duo for iPad (review)

One of the coolest aspects to owning the iPad is that companies are increasingly looking to it to recreate the board game experience digitally. The hardcore purists are probably up in arms at that statement, but really there are more than a few upsides to it. The digital versions are usually significantly cheaper, scoring and setup is handled for you, and my favorite is always having a willing opponent be it online or AI. While this is all good news though I don’t think it’s ready to replace the analog version quite yet.

As companies look to bridge the gap between digital and analog gaming things should get really interesting for consumers and gamers. Case in point is the Duo and it’s accompanying game Yoomi (You, Me) from Discovery Bay Games. It’s a two part system of both analog and digital components and does a good job of connecting the two. But let’s explain what Yoomi with Duo is.

Let’s Play! Yomi (Card game review)

Imagine taking your favorite fighting game and making it a card game, wouldn’t that be awesome? Well, you don’t have to do a shred of work to make that possibility a reality cause Sirlin games already has it covered with the competitive card fighting game Yomi.

Yomi means “reading” in Japanese, as in to read your opponent, and that’s pretty much the main mantra of the game. Anticipate your opponent to set up dodges, throws and attacks to drain them of hit points. There are super moves, power ups, combos, the works.

In addition to all that Yomi is also one more thing actually – it’s one of the best games I’ve played this year… easily. Let’s take a look at how it all works.

Let’s Play! Seven Dragons the Card Game (review)

We’re big fans of Looney Labs round these parts. There’s something refreshing about simple fun to play card games. It also doesn’t hurt that the company obviously loves what it does, and that love bleeds through to all the products they release.

Primarily known for their line of Fluxx games (we’ve reviewed both Martian Fluxx and Pirate Fluxx here before) they made waves this year with their Back to the Future card game which actually just won an award at Origins and is based on their inventive Chrononauts game system.

Seven Dragons is completely different from all those other games however. Featuring big beautiful artwork and a simple game mechanic, it’s low price point makes is a perfect inclusion in just about every game collection.

So, with that said, let’s play some Seven Dragons!

Let’s Play! Godzilla: Kaiju World Wars (review)

I have a confession to make: I’ve seen Mothra vs. Godzilla more times than should be legally allowed.  This isn’t something I’m boasting about mind you – nobody should take pride in needing four digits to count the number of times I’ve heard “save our egg!” shouted by two miniature ladies.  You see, rather than boasting, I bring you this fact with my head hung in lowly shame.  I had thought I’d finally left my Mothra-watching kaiju ways behind me – but Toy Vault Games was insistent on dragging me back in with their city-smashing good time, Godzilla: Kaiju World Wars.

Let’s get one thing clear right up front: Kaiju World Wars is exactly what you’d want a Godzilla-licensed game to be – mindless destruction.  Players will pick between one of four kaiju (giant monster for those not fluent in Japanese geekery) and set out to destroy buildings, military vehicles, and the kaiju of other players in an attempt to become the (wait for it…) king of the monsters!
