  • This book Pac-Sucks…

There have been lots and lots of bad decisions made by the game industry over the years. FMV in video games, giving 50-cent his own game, the virtual boy, etc. But in the early days of gaming, when the first game characters were becoming famous icons in their own right, companies whored them out George Lucas style and put their likeness on anything and everything they could.

As a kid I had Space Invaders t-shirts, a Pac-man trash can, a Mario Bros. TV tray, and a Sonic the Hedgehog mini-pinball…. you get the idea.

Now, for some reason, as an adult I enjoy re-collecting all this crap. Don’t ask me why, I couldn’t give you an answer. Not a satisfactory answer for any rational person anyway.

eBay is a wicked mistress sometimes. I’m killing time, surfing the videogame section and I find this book. On a goof, I bid 50 cents. Lucky me, I win. So I pony up and paypal out the money, hoping to at least get something a little funny or cool in return. This takes the cake as the dumbest thing I’ve bought from eBay.

In all my years of collecting this junk, I’ve never run across anything like this. This book bills itself as the “Official Pac-Man Joke Book”. But I take issue with that. There’s no jokes in this book at all. And I’m not saying there’s jokes but they’re not funny. I’m saying there’s no jokes. It’s just different puns with the word pac crammed in.

Lucky for all of you, I scanned some pages so you can see for yourself

Own anything on this level of craziness video-game memorabilia wise? Let us know, I have to find something worse than this so I can sleep at night.

A Guide To Geeking Out…Without Electricity

Oh, The Huge Manatee!I was browsing Reddit, as I’m wont to do, and came across this illustration poking some fun at “Things To Do When The Internet Is Down“. After getting an appropriate level of amusement from the witty jpeg I started thinking about how I came home from work the other day to find the power out at my house. I soon found out that this in no way affects my dog but quickly the panic set in for a couple of practical reasons but mostly for the completely impractical ones: No TV. No PS3/Xbox/Steam. No…INTERNET.

I found myself in any geek’s nightmare.

I decided that the best course of action was to soak up every bit of quickly diminishing sunlight by sitting next to a window and reading as much of A Storm of Swords as I could before I could no longer see. Luckily, just as I was finishing another chapter the power came roaring back to life, bringing the sweet hum of all my first world electric comforts back to life and restoring my heartbeat and anxiety levels to normal.

Though the inspiration for this was intended for humor it got me thinking that it would be prudent for us to compile A Geek’s Guide For Geeking Out When The Electric Goes Out. So hit the jump to see what we came up with.  (more…)

Weekly Wallpaper featuring Pac-Man in SPACE

I’m a huge fan of the subtle reference. Take for instance this weeks weekly wallpaper. Astronaut being haunted by ghouls? Or an awesome Pac-Man inspired take on SPACE MADNESS. (note the helmet, and of course the colors of the people in the pic). The picture is also available as a Threadless tee, if you’re so inclined.

1920X1200, just click the image to get at the full size, then save accordingly!

BTW, we have over 70 Perpetually Geeky wallpapers just waiting to be downloaded over at our Facebook page. You should totally visit us and give us a “like!”

    A Trip to Barcade Philadelphia

Barcade Philadelphia HeaderIt’s no surprise that we have very fond memories of countless hours spent hunkered over various arcade cabinets in dark, dingy places that monopolized our youth. For Dan’s bachelor party we made the trek from South Jersey (and Virginia and Toronto) to the Fun Spot in New Hampshire, well known as the classic arcade mecca in the United States. If you’ve paid attention to our podcasts you might have also picked up that I’m a huge craft beer fan too. A few years ago a little place in Brooklyn called Barcade opened up and it sounded like exactly the kind of place that made me say “I want to go to there”. A little over a year ago they announced that they’d be opening up a location in Philadelphia that finally opened a couple weeks ago. I grabbed a bunch of quarters and made my way over the Ben Franklin Bridge to pay this place a visit. Did it live up to the place I had built up in my head? Read on to find out.

    Perpetual Geek Machine #00014

This episode plays out a bit differently than our standard set-up. There’s no geekspew as there was simply no news stories we thought interesting enough to make show topics. We kinda decided it was better to just drop the segment for the week as opposed to finding a less than ideal story to talk about. No sense in boring the listeners just for the sake of having the segment (at least that was our thinking).

It dawns on me now that I probably should’ve talked a bit about Harry Potter 7, since it’s certainly geeky and something I have seen since the last show. Me talking about how cool it was would certainly have fallen on deaf ears though, as neither of my fellow podcasters care about the series really.

As we roll into the holidays you’re probably thinking about what you can get us as a present (and if you’re not you should be). Well the thing we want the most is for you to tell your friends about us! Tell them to check out the show or visit the site, we really would appreciate it.

Here’s the link to give Perpetual Geek Machine: Show #00014 a listen!

Here’s the breakdown on where to find/follow us online!
