I’m a child of the arcades. I cut my teeth on Mr. Do, Centipede, Spy Hunter, Gauntlet, Mortal Kombat… you know the drill. There was nothing like heading to Aladdin’s Castle, saddling up to a cabinet, dropping in a token an taking a firm grip of the controls. Tangible, honest to god joysticks and buttons. I love games nowadays, and have embraced touchscreen gaming fully. But still, it’s hard to fondly remember the way it used to be. Enter the Atari Arcade controller powered by Duo.
You may remember Duo as the add on peripheral called Yoomi that is also used in conjunction with the iPad. Discovery Bay Games went back to the idea of physical additions to the iPad to push the device in a new direction once again, this time turning your iPad into a little mini arcade machine.

It might have been a slow week on the blog here but that doesn’t mean we weren’t busy consuming tons of other awesomeness. You’ll notice that What’cha Been Doing runs almost 90 minutes this week. Yeah…it’s a barn-burner but hey, we entertained ourselves. Quite honestly we didn’t even realize that that much time had passed.

Show Notes in brief, unlike this show:

Willow the Whale is having a pretty bad day. Turns out getting chased about by Baron Von Barry (an evil “thing”) kinda sucks. But Willow has a plan. He’s going to use the power of the Whale Trail to ride a rainbow into the sky and then fly to all the colorful kingdoms of Rainbow Land. Sounds like an acid trip your parents told you about they had back in the 70′s? Possibly. But it’s also an awesome new iOS game for your iPod/iPhone/iPad.

Move over Dan! I’m taking over the show notes! Well, for this show at least. Dan is woefully absent from this session as Ryan, Rich and I try to make due without him. Everywhere Dan isn’t there’s a gaping hole but we do our best to press on. Winter is coming, after all.
Listen to the podcast here, and be sure to stick around for Ryan’s super amazing (if short) impression of a famous cartoon character.

One of the coolest aspects to owning the iPad is that companies are increasingly looking to it to recreate the board game experience digitally. The hardcore purists are probably up in arms at that statement, but really there are more than a few upsides to it. The digital versions are usually significantly cheaper, scoring and setup is handled for you, and my favorite is always having a willing opponent be it online or AI. While this is all good news though I don’t think it’s ready to replace the analog version quite yet.
As companies look to bridge the gap between digital and analog gaming things should get really interesting for consumers and gamers. Case in point is the Duo and it’s accompanying game Yoomi (You, Me) from Discovery Bay Games. It’s a two part system of both analog and digital components and does a good job of connecting the two. But let’s explain what Yoomi with Duo is.

Pre Pax Podcast Program! We’re pretty excited about our impending trip to Boston, for more than a few reasons. First and foremost is that it’s a chance to see friends that we really don’t get to spend time with very often. It’s not routine for even the 3 of us here to be in the same room together, so it’s some cause for celebration. Then naturally the show itself should be a damn good time, if last year were any indication. Once again there’s more to do than there is time to do it so it’s a 3 day war of attrition to see what we feel like seeing.
But that’s this weekend, for right now WE HAVE A WHOLE NEW podcast for you!

Boston bound but we still have time for show notes! (more…)

With the impending pagan holiday ushering in a new flock of Pads and Pods and Phones, now seems like a good time to pick out some tasty software from the Apple iTunes Store That Is Also Actually An App Store Even Though It’s Still Called iTunes. Wading into that armpit-deep morass of cheap cash-ins and fart autotuners to divine what is good and what is garbage can be… well, it takes a lot of time.
These are apps that I may find useful, but not necessarily. There are acres of text out there describing the best productivity apps, or great games, or best knitting reference tools. This isn’t that. Instead, these are what I show someone who just bought an iThing, when they want to see something super cool. It’s boring to whip out an iPad and show off a to-do list, even if the interface is bound in sumptuous digital leather. No, you want to see the thing dance. You want to see something unique.
Without further ado: my list.

What a strange feeling to not start off the post with the words “bitcast.” After 90 episodes it feels off-putting to put the term to bed, yet I can’t help but be excited about moving to greener pastures. In a lot of ways it’s the same old show, but with a brand new coat of polish unfound in the old bitcast days. What you’ll find here is what we think to be a more refined, professional version of what we used to do. We all went into the show nervous even though we’ve literally done it over 100 times now. It was new, fresh and exciting and I think it came across in the recording.
The dust is still settling around here, but we’ve opened for business nonetheless. It’s an exciting time and you’ll see features and enhancements hit the site over the next week or so as it all solidifies. Until then, let’s get on with the show!
