  • Perpetual Geek Machine invades PAX East 2012

Sadly another PAX East has come and gone. But I know I’m not along with my fellow PGM’ers that this was our favorite show yet.

Alot of that probably has to do with the fact that we’ve gotten good and moving with the tide of the show, and we’ve learned some lessons on saving ourselves some headaches and time. For instance sleeping in and not waiting in the morning queue is definitely the way to go.

In addition to seeing lots of great panels, going to concerts, playing cool games and engaging in a TON of Cards Against Humanity we also managed to bring back some of the coolest parts of PAX for your guys. Here’s some of the cool shit we were involved with over the course of the show!

All in all we had a great time, and can’t wait to go next year.

Lords of Waterdeep. Euro-gaming in the Dungeons and Dragons universe!

Wizards of the Coast did a great job of bringing the RPG Dungeons and Dragons to the board game arena last year. They released the Risk-ish area control game Conquest of Nerath and the tile-based co-op dungeon crawlers Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon and Legend of Drizzt. All good in their own ways for sure. But with Lords of Waterdeep they’ve gone in a totally different direction. Euro.

This is a worker placement game, through and through. You’ll use workers placed around the board to trigger different events. The goal is not to rack up a body count or hoard treasure like in a dungeon crawler, here it’s all about victory points. And while it takes place in the Dungeons and Dragons universe, the influence of the seminal RPG is minimal when it comes to gameplay rather taking the inspiration for the setting and activities be colored by DnD. Why, there aren’t even any dice in the game! I know, it’s craziness!

    It’s also fantastic.

    Weekday Replay for 3/24/12

It was a light week of content here but what we were able to push out was pretty solid. So here’s a look back at the content we pushed out this week:

On Monday, Adam contributed his first post of the week by taking a look at the Dungeons and Dragons book: Player’s Option: Heroes of the Elemental Chaos

On Tuesday, Dan found some wallpapers that look like…well, wallpapers!

On Wednesday, we took the day off. Geeking out is hard work ya’ll. I did go see The Hunger Games though so I’ll chat about that on our next podcast.

On Thursday, Adam recounted our Friday night with the Nerdist crew.

On Friday, I reviewed the fun board game Rallyman that brings rally racing to your tabletop.

For our random old post this week you should check out my review of the comic SVK.

…catch yourself up on all our episodes, give us a “Like” on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our YouTube channel. If you don’t mind, that is. Have a great weekend everyone!

Dungeons and Dragons book: Player’s Option: Heroes of the Elemental Chaos

The latest in the Player’s Option series finds us travelling to the Plane of Elemental Chaos. Where the last two books gave us a great deal of flavorful and intricate options, this one deals with the baser, primordial ones.

Players, ever wonder where those elementals come from that get conjured just as you get close to the evil wizard? DMs of higher level campaigns, tired of using the cliché “super-powerful evil cleric run amok” or “this quest is the will of the gods” as a plot device? Give elemental prince primordials a try as a source of adventure.

If you find yourself wanting to play a character/NPC that is the embodiment of the meme, “Kill it with fire” this is your book, read on…

A look at the Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes of the Feywild options book

No matter what flavor of Dungeons and Dragons you play, the game is rooted in fantasy. I’m willing to bet that most of us were introduced to the world of fantasy in the same way, through Fairy Tales told to us when we were tiny children.

Witches casting spells on innocent little girls. Magical beasts frolic in mythical forests. Animal monsters prowl the countryside looking for a tasty meal. Players Option: Heroes of the Feywild capitalizes on these themes beautifully.

I will admit, for the longest time when I heard ‘Feywild’ I would just think fairies and cuteness, but flipping through the introductory chapter really got my creative juices flowing with awesome ideas for both characters and adventures.

The book serves to give the player more options to creating a compelling character, similar to the Heroes of Shadow book that came out a few months back. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

    Weekday Replay for 1/29/12

We’ve been pretty lazy when it comes to keeping up with this post where we recap what we’ve put out there during the week. I feel it’s high time we get back to that. There’s some great stuff going on behind the scenes as well as what you see here, with more to come next week!

On Monday, I told you why I think the new indie PC game Dustforce is pretty great.

On Tuesday, we had a rare double shot of posts with a new Weekly Wallpaper and Ryan’s Unstoppable Gorg review.

On Wednesday, a new episode of our podcast exploded onto the digital airwaves.

On Thursday, Bryan thinks it’s time someone taught you Tichu.

On Saturday, Dan posted up a gallery of some D&D maps that might interest you.

For our random old post this week I’m pointing back to Dan’s review of the D&D Red Box.

There’s not much left of the weekend but enjoy your Sunday night and we’ll see you this week! If you catch this post in time you might still be able to enter our Magic:TG card contest on our Facebook page.

Gallery: Haunted Temples Dungeons and Dragons map pack

This is a first for me, and I think as a product for WotC, at least in 4th edition. They’ve been releasing dungeon tile sets to help people build their own layouts with various themes (see our Witchlight Fens gallery here) and then the pre-made adventures typically come with some large foldout maps as well.

Today though we’re taking a look at a pack of those large 21X30 inch foldout maps, 3 double-sided layouts in all. Some of them are totally new, others have long been out of print. If you’ve been looking for a broken down cathedral/cemetery or other haunts to place your characters, you may want to give this one a look. As usual they’re crazy detailed, can be fit into any campaign, and you get 3 sheets (6 maps total).

Sorry for the glare, was tough to get such a large shot at once, and I don’t have any plastic to flatten them out right this second. Enjoy the gallery.

    Weekday Replay for 11/12/11

This past week we were able to push out a pretty nice selection of content for you all. We’ve got some cool stuff being worked on behind-the-scenes right now. Some of it will be pushed out next week and some later this month, but I promise, it’ll be worth that wait! Hope you guys and gals are having a great, geek-fueled weekend. Let’s take a look at the week that was:

On Monday, Kickstarter Spotlight on Z-Ward

On Tuesday we introduced the first in our series of Weekly Wallpapers. This one’s from Uncharted 3.

On Wednesday we reviewed the recent high-concept sci-fi film In Time

On Thursday we went dungeon crawling with the new Dungeons & Dragons The Legend of Drizzt Board Game

On Friday I intended to post something cool, but then Skyrim was released and well, that’s what I did instead. You’ll here all about it next week on our next podcast!

For our random old post this week we’re going all the way back to my review of The Human Centipede.

    Have a great week everybody!
