The real-life motorsport that is rally racing is a wholly unique experience that’s not widely known in these United States. Mostly confined to Europe you’ll find offroad point-to-point racing where the drivers compete for the fastest time during a stage. The cars start individually at preset intervals to allow the cars general free-use of the courses that aren’t built to allow a large number of cars to run at the same time. The stage times accumulate to an overall time that determines the winner. Boardgames like Formula D have already tackled the world of Formula 1 racing and PGM favorite Snow Tails adapted a similar tabletop formula for the world of dog sled racing. Today we’re looking at Rallyman to see how well they’ve brought rally to a tabletop near you. (more…)
There seems to have been a rush lately on quick, easy to play and even more portable dice games. In the last few months we’ve looked at Zombie Dice, Martian Dice, Ice Dice and even Cthulhu Dice. Each offers up super simple rules and seems tailor made to take on the road or pack up for a convention, vacation or getaway.
Well, we can add another one to the list in the recently released Army Vs. Aliens. But don’t worry about getting dice game burnout if you already own a few games in that last paragraph since while it certainly has a few similarities it does a good job of setting itself and really offers a unique experience. Let’s take a closer look.

A few months ago we took a look at the simple to play and easy to transport cup of dice game Zombie Dice from Steve Jackson Games. In it you play as zombies and roll different dice to try and eat as many brains as you can before getting shotgunned to death (so to speak, you are a zombie after all).
It’s a crazy simple game, plays up to however many people you have and is nice and portable which makes it great for both downtime at a con or even at the bar with friends.
Well, Tasty Minstrel Games has a new dice game that takes the basic premise of Zombie Dice and adds a nice twist to it, making it ever so slightly more complex and (we think) fun to play. Instead of zombies you play as martians, and instead of eating brains you’re trying to scoop up as many earthly inhabitants as possible

I’m not going to lie: I’m still not sick of zombies. Even with all the video games, comics, movies, and TV Series, I’m still not sick of them. Not even Zombieland put me off them. And I really hated that movie. For whatever reason though, I’ve never read a single word of “The Walking Dead,” and I’ve only seen the first two episodes of the TV series (which I loved), but I was really excited when presented with the opportunity to play the new “Walking Dead,” board game, I jumped at the chance. It’s a board game based on the most successful modern zombie franchise out there, so what could go wrong?

There are games like Dominant Species or Conquest of Nerath that require a dedicated group of people getting together for the expressed reason of playing that particular game. The rules are a bit dense, and you need to concentrate on what you’re doing. Then there are the middle of the road games like 7 Wonders and Small World Underground where the rules are definitely there and you kinda need to concentrate but there’s more of a social “hang-out” thing going on.
Then there’s the 3rd group of games, where there’s only a few simple rules and are better played while socializing. Zombie Dice (and to a much much lesser extent Cthulhu Dice) is the epitome of this game. You take your turn, pass the cup to the next person and go back to socializing and ignoring the game in general until it comes back around to you. We’ve done this with large groups at the bar and at PAX and it’s perfect. Ice Dice isn’t quite as simple as Zombie Dice, but I’d still put it in the same category and will definitely be packing it the next time we’re at PAX or another con.

A few weeks ago I talked about the super fast, super easy Zombie Dice. It plays out in just a few minutes and offers a lot more fun that it’s basic components would seem. Well, Cthulhu Dice is even easier (and half the price!) and is perfect for on-the-go play. Luckily the rules are pretty different between these two dice games, so you can buy both and know you’re not buying the same game twice with just a different theme. OK, let’s awaken the Old God Cthulhu and learn all about his new dice game!

Some games are meant to be epic. Some games are expected to last the entire length of game night. Then there are the fillers, the games you play between games. They last 5-10 minutes and are so short that some people use them to determine who goes first in the next non-filler game. Zombie dice is one of those games. Also, it’s awesome.
