  • DC Comics The New 52: Catching Up With Voodoo

    Voodoo Header

If you remember reading my review of Voodoo #1 you already know two things: I had no previous knowledge of Voodoo before the relaunch and I really hated the seemingly shallow character and setting. To me this first issue represented a lot of what I don’t like about comics which mostly revolves around poor female characters. The argument and conversations concerning this topic aren’t new but they’re still happening which means that a problem still exists to some extent. In my view comics like Voodoo were perpetuating the overly sexualized and shallow female characters that run all too rampant.

A single issue, about 20 pages, is not a lot of space to delve too deep into developing a character. A couple of our readers who were much more familiar with Voodoo had commented on my review and made a case that there was definitely more to her than what there seemed. Of course, I didn’t think that what was laid out in that first issue was everything so I recently went back and picked up issue #2 through the current #6 to check things out for myself. (more…)

DC Comics The New 52: Voodoo #1 Review

Voodoo #1 Review headerFull disclosure: I know fuck all about Voodoo. To the point that I didn’t even know she was a character that existed in any universe. So when DC relaunches the series as part of The New 52 this is the perfect time to start learning myself about her, right?

Here’s the thing: I’ve now read Voodoo #1 and here’s the summation of what I know about Voodoo: She’s a stripper who shape-shifts into some sort of monster/alien/thing. I also know that I probably won’t be reading Voodoo #2.

Ep #00035: Perpetual Geek Machine Podcast

This one here is a bit special to me dear listeners, as I got to interview one of my favorite fantasy authors R.A. Salvatore! I’ve been reading his books since high school (trust me, it’s been awhile) and he always manages to capture my imagination. Really cool, down-to-Earth guy too. In addition to talking about his new upcoming book, we also talk about the origins of Drizzt (his most famous character), as well as comic books, Dungeons and Dragons and some of the work he’s doing over at 38 Studios.

In addition to that we have a 4 man show and lots to talk about. So this one is a doozy! I’d apologize but to be honest I think it’s all pretty interesting!

DC Comics The New 52: Catwoman #1 Review

Speaking strictly for us here at Perpetual Geek Machine, this whole DC New 52 thing has been a rousing success. While each of us enjoys comic books in an abstract way we just don’t tend to read them month to month, and as such have only dabbled. We’re more fans of the few times a year trade paperbacks. So a reboot has been just what the doctored for us, and we’ve jumped in with both feet to try out some of the new books. Hot on the heels of last week’s look at Detective Comics #1 we’re back with a title that focuses on another Gotham City resident in Catwoman #1.

Ep #00034: Perpetual Geek Machine Podcast

Oh man, it’s late. We’ve been playing a lot of Horde mode in Gears of War 3 tonight, and now it’s way past my bedtime. Yet, I’m here dear listeners, finishing up this post and making it live on the webs so we can download it in the morning for your drive to work. It’s me pleasure, we appreciate each and every one of you that listens to us!
