Marvel movies of late have never seemed particularly good to me. Sure, they can be entertaining with well-done action sequences but that’s about where my interest stops. These movies tend to lack quality and they range from okay to pretty good. The plots have started to run together for me because they all mirror each other. The bad guy hatches a plot, the hero steps up, tries to overcome a personal obstacle and defeats the bad guy in the nick of time. “The Avengers” looked like more of the same and I was in no rush to go out and see it. I was confused when so many people kept telling me how good it was and I was even more confused when I found out how much money it was making. Maybe Marvel had stepped up its game and made a super hero movie that gets out of its comfort zone? Not really, but I had a lot more fun watching this than I did with “Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,” ”Captain America” and “The Incredible Hulk.” I missed “Thor”, but I don’t think I’m missing much. (more…)

If you remember reading my review of Voodoo #1 you already know two things: I had no previous knowledge of Voodoo before the relaunch and I really hated the seemingly shallow character and setting. To me this first issue represented a lot of what I don’t like about comics which mostly revolves around poor female characters. The argument and conversations concerning this topic aren’t new but they’re still happening which means that a problem still exists to some extent. In my view comics like Voodoo were perpetuating the overly sexualized and shallow female characters that run all too rampant.
A single issue, about 20 pages, is not a lot of space to delve too deep into developing a character. A couple of our readers who were much more familiar with Voodoo had commented on my review and made a case that there was definitely more to her than what there seemed. Of course, I didn’t think that what was laid out in that first issue was everything so I recently went back and picked up issue #2 through the current #6 to check things out for myself. (more…)
Usually when I hear about musicians trying to expand their horizons and dip their toes into another medium’s pool, I openly reject the attempt and dismiss it as someone trying to take advantage of their fame. Whether that be to make themselves or someone else some money or to further some sort of artistic manifesto that really doesn’t mean a damn thing to me.
That being said, when I heard that Dandy Warhols lead singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor had written the graphic novel, One Model Nation, I was definitely intrigued. I’m a big enough fan of the band The Dandy Warhols to know that Taylor-Taylor is a bit of a weirdo, so I figured if he’s taken a stab at writing a graphic novel, it would definitely be worth a read.

Full disclosure: I know fuck all about Voodoo. To the point that I didn’t even know she was a character that existed in any universe. So when DC relaunches the series as part of The New 52 this is the perfect time to start learning myself about her, right?
Here’s the thing: I’ve now read Voodoo #1 and here’s the summation of what I know about Voodoo: She’s a stripper who shape-shifts into some sort of monster/alien/thing. I also know that I probably won’t be reading Voodoo #2.

I’m not going to lie; Brian Michael Bendis is definitely responsible for a percentage of my economic instability. After 10 years of not buying comics, I bought the first couple of issues of his run writing Daredevil in 2001, and I was hooked. From there I tried to buy as much of his stuff as my meager means would allow. I wasn’t reading a ton of comics, but more often than not when I did, they had the Bendis name on them. Then I got a car, and that was the end of that. Fortune however, is on my side, since my car is now paid for and Bendis has just started writing Marvel’s new Moon Knight series.
Now, there’s going to be a some comic readers that aren’t going to be too familiar with the Moon Knight character. That makes perfect sense. To be honest, neither am I. Moon Knight is like, a third level Avenger. Let me put it this way: If the Avengers were the Peanuts gang, Moon Knight would be Shermy. He would be playing a shepherd in the Avengers’ Christmas Pageant. He has had previous series and whenever he’s popped up with cameo appearances or whatever he has always been kind of a cool character that was intriguing to me. That could be because of the basic similarities to Batman, I don’t know; but it has been a very long time since he’s had any kind of spotlight thrown his way.

If you’ve never heard of R.A. Salvatore but you’re connected to the Dungeons and Dragons world at all you’ve no doubt dealt with his creations. He’s been one of the most prolific fiction writers for the genre, starting way back in the late 80′s with The Crystal Shard which introduced his most famous character the dark elf Drizzt Do’Ourden. This week his new book “Neverwinter” hits shelves at part 2 of the Neverwinter Trilogy of books and marks Drizzt’s roughly 23rd book.
In the following interview we talk about Drizzt and life as a character, Salvatore’s work with in the Kingdoms of Amalur world with 38 Studios, the comic book series he’s writing with his son and a lengthy discussion of the new book.
You can hear the non-spoliler version of the interview in episode 35 of our podcast or you can snag the full unedited version over on our Facebook page!
The book serves as the sequel to Gauntylgrym, which has some pretty World shattering events that are discussed. So spoiler warning now, if you want to read Gauntylgrym but haven’t yet there’s some stuff down in that section that you may not want to read.
On a side note I should say it was a real thrill to get a chance to talk with him, and he couldn’t have been a more down to Earth cool guy. We really appreciate him taking the time out for us.
Enjoy!
