Historically, I don’t like games that don’t have dice. Back in the day, I used to “play” Dungeons and Dragons and the Marvel Super Heroes RPG…but by “play,” I mean “make characters and then not use them,” because the generation process consisted mostly of rolling dice. Whether or not that points to some sort of innate gambling problem or what, I don’t know, but that was definitely the case. The last year or two has significantly changed my feelings on this, with my introduction to, and love of, Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne.
When looking at the Tasty Minstrel Games release Belfort, I got the feeling that it might be similar to those other games I had come to love, and since other TMG games (Eminent Domain, Martian Dice, Train of Thought, Jab), had received very good reviews on this site, I was pretty psyched to give it a whirl. My anticipation did not go unrewarded.

Yesterday we posted our last podcast of the year, in which each of us presented our top 5 things of 2011. From that we then came up with a group of items and debated which things we should have represent Perpetual Geek Machine for 2011. We decided to eschew a standard top 5 list and instead pick one singular thing, and then have runner-ups in no particular order.
It was one of our finest shows to date and combined all 5 of the main writers here on the site! I can’t recommend it enough, and would love it if you listen and if you like it please share it with your friends.
But if you don’t want to listen, or you’d just like to read the results please join us after the break for our individual lists as well as our choice for Perpetual Geek Machine Thing of 2011!

If there’s anything I’ve learned from the two games that served as my introduction into the World Beyond Monopoly of board games (Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne) it’s that I love building cities and civilizations with tiles. Maybe it’s the Lego-lover in me that loves using pieces free form to build something bigger, I don’t know. I guess it makes sense that I also love trying to destroy island villages via lava fire tiles. Such is the case in Eruption by Status Games.

Shopping for geeks at the holidays is hard, luckily we’re here to help! Alot of people think board games live and die with Monopoly and Clue, and that’s a real shame. There’s a whole plethora of fantastic games out there just waiting to be played, wonderfully crafted and ones that appeal to any age group and interest. Below is a list of our favorite games from 2011.
Whether the geek on your list is a Sci-Fi fan or a Fantasy nut, likes role playing or just rolling dice, there’s something on the list that they’d love to see under the tree!
Thanks for looking and don’t forget to check out our previous gift guides, all about Books and Sound & Vision!

On Thursday we went dungeon crawling with the new Dungeons & Dragons The Legend of Drizzt Board Game
On Friday I intended to post something cool, but then Skyrim was released and well, that’s what I did instead. You’ll here all about it next week on our next podcast!
For our random old post this week we’re going all the way back to my review of The Human Centipede.
Have a great week everybody!
