David Fincher's film adaptation of Stieg Larsson's first entry in the Millenium series, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," is now my third roll in the hay with the same story. I read the book, I watched the excellent 2009 Swedish adaptation of the book, and I gave it another go with David Fincher's take on it. Despite knowing exactly what was going to happen (two times anyway), this engrossing story and these memorable characters managed to come off as exhilarating, and fresh once more. That is exactly why I find it unfortunate that this movie was so criminally underwatched this past holiday season from what I've read, but don't let the box office grosses fool you. This is one of the best movies of 2011, hands down. If this is your first introduction to the main character, Lisbeth Salander, you won't be disappointed with David Fincher's vision.

I love film noir. The stories are all generally the same but the stories have never been what makes them so special. It's the mood and feel and look of those films that give them a special place in many a cinephile's heart. When I saw the cover of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' new comic Fatale I immediately knew it was something I must consume immediately.

Look at that thing. It's one of the finest covers I've seen for a comic in a long time. Sure, it's simple. Black, white and red. The close up of a "classic" film noir femme fatale holding a steaming gun. The demon suggesting there might be something more to this than just your straight-up noir storytelling. I was sucked in, but that's just the cover. Does the rest of this first issue live up to the promise laid out on the front? Keep reading to find out.

A few weeks ago I picked up the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. It's the latest and greatest Android phone, complete with version 4.0 of the operating system more commonly known as Ice Cream Sandwich. I had been patiently waiting to replace my Motorola Droid for a while and when word started spreading that the flagship Android phone would finally be hitting Verizon I knew I wanted to hold off from buying the HTC Thunderbolt, Samsung Droid Charge or anything else that seemed appealing at the time.

Overall, I've been very pleased with everything about the phone. ICS is snappy and responsive, pretty close to being on par with iOS 5 from what I can tell. Switching between apps now seems to be everything that it was originally promised to be. I'd almost dare say that after all this time, this might finally be Android's coming out party.

One of the things that surprised me after I got the phone was the included "Movie Studio" software. This app was released as part of the tablet-only Honeycomb 3.0 software and is making its phone debut in ICS. It's clearly a response to the mobile version of iMovie, which is to be expected when you have too huge companies competing as fiercely as Apple and Google are. Though I have absolutely zero experience with iMovie I have plenty of experience with professional video editing software so I decided to test out Movie Studio to see what it's all about.

If there's anything I've learned from the two games that served as my introduction into the World Beyond Monopoly of board games (Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne) it's that I love building cities and civilizations with tiles. Maybe it's the Lego-lover in me that loves using pieces free form to build something bigger, I don't know. I guess it makes sense that I also love trying to destroy island villages via lava fire tiles. Such is the case in Eruption by Status Games.

In Eruption the goal is simple: Keep your village from being burned while trying to redirect the lava flow towards your competitor's villages. The square game board features a circular island with a volcano at its center and six villages spread out evenly around the coast. Starting at the center players tack a new lava tile onto an existing flow trying to aim them towards any village that's not yours. You can try to protect your village buy putting up walls that usually only act for a short amount of time to lessen the inevitable damage. Players can also use action cards that affect the flow of the lava or the villages' defenses.

I was browsing Reddit, as I'm wont to do, and came across this illustration poking some fun at "Things To Do When The Internet Is Down". After getting an appropriate level of amusement from the witty jpeg I started thinking about how I came home from work the other day to find the power out at my house. I soon found out that this in no way affects my dog but quickly the panic set in for a couple of practical reasons but mostly for the completely impractical ones: No TV. No PS3/Xbox/Steam. No...INTERNET.

I found myself in any geek's nightmare.

I decided that the best course of action was to soak up every bit of quickly diminishing sunlight by sitting next to a window and reading as much of A Storm of Swords as I could before I could no longer see. Luckily, just as I was finishing another chapter the power came roaring back to life, bringing the sweet hum of all my first world electric comforts back to life and restoring my heartbeat and anxiety levels to normal.

Though the inspiration for this was intended for humor it got me thinking that it would be prudent for us to compile A Geek's Guide For Geeking Out When The Electric Goes Out. So hit the jump to see what we came up with.

The director of "In Time," Andrew Niccol, tends to make movies that focus on technology and how a parallel society uses that technology to build and control the world around them. "In Time" is a movie about a world where time is traded and earned like currency. With a focus on the ridiculous amped up to eleventy bajillion my excitement for the third installment is palpable, to say the least. Luckily developer Volition has been able to temporarily satiate my frothing-at-the-mouth desire by releasing a stand alone character creator to play around with until the full game comes out on the 15th. Check out this video below to see some of what insanity you'll find if grab it on Steam.

Anyone who was raised on MTV in the late 80s or early 90s should (fondly) remember the groundbreaking animation showcase series Liquid Television. Yes, this was during the time when MTV "still showed music videos" but they also had a plethora of alternative entertainment. Watching "1/2 Hour Comedy Hour" made me fall in love with stand up comedy. Similarly Liquid Television was the only place for the 12 year-old me to see these strange and fascinating shorts. Some were taken from the Spike & Mike's Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation (which I was too young to attend and much too immature to fully appreciate) so watching Liquid Television was the next best thing.

Here you’ll play though various scenarios flying your ships around in space fighting as either the Intergalactic Space Navy or the alien Wretcheridians. You’ll manage your resources, deploy ships and play cards to gain an upper hand in an effort to destroy your opponent. It’s not random Battleship, I’d say it’s more "wargame lite".

Writer, director, star, genius, and demi-god, Tommy Wiseau made what is one of the most fantastically awful, and simultaneously entertaining movies I've ever seen. "The Room" focuses on relationships, love, trust, and betrayal among a group of people who can't act.
Personally, I don't understand the sport of boxing. It's not that I can't follow what's going on in the ring or why people enjoy watching it. No, it's more that I don't understand why people would want to participate in a sport where the goal is to limit the amount you get beat up. Getting punched in the head at work is not something I'll ever find myself interested in doing. All that said I really like boxing videogames and LOVE movies about the punch-happy sport. Hell, I've lived all my life across the river from where Rocky was filmed. I've run up the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I've ate lightning and crapped thunder!

To say that I've never played a tabletop game based on boxing is a lie, I owned Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots like any other child of my era worth their salt in having good toy taste. It's definitely suffice to say that I've never played a tabletop card game based on boxing. Let alone one that's played in real time. Hit the jump and I'll explain some more.

More often than not, movies will be released that are hardly discernible from one another. Hollywood pumps out movies and practically beats a genre to death before finding out what else will sell. I, for one, am sick of seeing trailers for movies about vampires, superheroes, and pretty much anything Michael Bay puts out. It takes a lot of guts to make something different and unconventional and this is something that "Drive" does well. That last sentence is exactly where my appreciation for "Drive" ends.

(Single-player campaign review) There’s an old expression that my dad used to use: when you are holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Maybe it’s our tool-oriented brains doing this trick, because it’s also true that when you are holding a gun, everything looks like a target. Guns are popular in videogames because of [...]

I'll be the first to admit that romantic comedies have never been my favorite genre of film. I've seen some of the worst ones, and I probably don't really give many of the good ones a fair shake. That's why I love it when a movie like "Crazy, Stupid, Love." catches me almost completely by surprise. It's a charming, funny slice of the lives of several people and it shows the way love affects and shapes their lives.
