The Geekly, PGM’s weekly report of cool things! (10/3/13)

9880296134_7b6f722fdf_h

Welcome to another exciting edition of the Geekly! There’s plenty of geekness to talk about, including Breaking Bad, Pinny Arcade, and new stuff at Thinkgeek. Read on and get ready to open your wallet!

Let’s talk about Breaking Bad, and how amazing that finale was. I was blown away completely by the perfection of the ending, even if some people had issues. As far as I remember, that question WAS answered – but who am I to challenge the New York Times? The important thing is that this t-shirt exists and I am probably going to buy it, if I haven’t bought it by the time you see this post.

Welcome to another exciting edition of the Geekly! I’ve got lots and lots of great stuff for you today, so get ready to be WOWed by geekiness!

Wizard World Philadelphia starts tomorrow (whoa!), so i thought I’d start this off with a photo of a little girl dressed like Stan Lee.

Before I dive into the tons of video game stuff I have, I’ll mention the other awesomeness first. Did you hear about the giant Lego X-Wing in Times Square? You should! You also need to check out this beautiful collection of then and now photos of the various Disney parks. Speaking of amazing buildings, this church on stilts will blow your mind.

Welcome to another exciting edition of the Geekly! Let’s start this one off with a bang: Kickstarter announced that people around the world pledged over $83 million dollars to games in 2012. That’s incredible! Check out their sweet Best of Kickstarter 2012 slide show. 2013 started off with a bang for games on Kickstarter as well, as the super creepy Kingdom Death: Monster made over two million dollars. I, personally, really want to put some money on Rivet Wars. Just watch that video and you’ll be hooked!

Top 5 Things of 2012: The Dan Zuccarelli Edition!

2012_2009_01

We here at Perpetual Geek Machine think life as a nerd has been pretty spectacular in 2012. Great movies, games, tv shows and more. We’ve made friends with Nicole Kline, and then put her to work writing here! Rich got engaged, Dan bought a house. There’s a good chance Ryan and/or Bryan did something adorably Canadian. Kevin spent most of the year brewing beer and Adam made it through the latest Mayan apocalypse mostly unscathed!

Just like last year to celebrate the end of this trip round the sun we got together to run down our top 5 favorite things of the year. We then presented those during part 1 of our spectacular year end podcast. In part 2 of that podcast we whittle out lists down to a Top 5 to represent the site as a whole, and then 1 singular item that is Perpetual Geek Machine’s favorite thing of 2012. Last year The Muppets was our winner. What will take the crown this year? Listen to the podcast to find out!

the Geekly, the PGM’s weekly report of cool geek things (9/27/12)

CharlieBrownThanksgivingVariantprint-224x300Welcome to another installment of the Geekly, PGM’s weekly geek roundup! We’ve got some pretty fantastic stuff for you to check out today, covering everything from strange things from Japan to the awesomeness of outer space. Spoiler alert: it’s a lot of awesome!

First up: I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this, but apparently there’s a company called Neuro Wear that sells cat ears that display your emotion by reading your brainwaves. These are called Necomini ears, and they cost a whopping $100. Even more ridiculous is the video over here at io9, showing a new item from the company: a tail to match the ears. I can’t tell if I’m disturbed at how bizarre it is or at the fact that I really can’t afford this kind of frivolity.

Ep #00055 – Perpetual Geek Machine Podcast

pgm_show_00055
The Machine keeps getting bigger! You heard his voice on our show before but he’s now going to be a regular contributor to our podcast bringing his expansive knowledge of movies, comics and (evidently) old-timey radio shows to the mix. Who, you ask? Why Bryan Wall, of course. He also makes a killer 5 Hit Combo debut on this show.

Build rides on the midway in card game Carnival

CarnivalTitle

I’m what you could probably call a big theme park fanatic. If you listen to the podcast much you’d know how often the wife and I make a trek down to Disney World. In between that we make regular trips to other parks/carnivals/fairs what have you to search out interesting and fun new rides to try out. I fully admit I’m pretty lucky to have found someone that will go on any ride with me, even stupid fast and crazy high ones (not my video but we have been on it). Tilt-a-whirls, Merry-go-rounds, bouncy castles, you name it. I love all that shit.

So it’s probably no surprise that I was a bit excited to get my hands on Carnival, which is all about those rides that I love so much.

Kickstarter Spotlight: VivaJava: The Coffee Game

KickstarterVivaJava
I always enjoy when we do one of these Kickstarter Spotlights. There’s so many great projects on there worth backing, and I love getting to know a little bit more about them and sharing all that info with you!

This time we were lucky enough to talk to Chris Kirkman from Dice Hate Me Games. He’s one of those fantastic stories that I think we can all be enviable of. For a long time Dice Hate Me was a game review / podcast site to cover the hobby that we loves so much. But then he took a step forward, and decided that in addition to covering games, he would start making them.

Their first game was called Carnival and now they’re running a Kickstarter campaign to fund and produce their second one, called VivaJava: The Coffee Game. Let’s learn a little more about it.

A marriage made possible by Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer

I feel like most people agree that Valentine’s Day is sort of a sham. I mean, it is. Luckily my wife and I both fall into that category and I know I don’t have to go jumping through hoops on some arbitrary day to make her happy.

Ep #00039 – Perpetual Geek Machine Podcast

pgm_show_00039
While we’re rolling out our Gift Guides all this week we found time to record a new show. Rich joins us again after making some major upgrade pre-orders to his personal life and has plenty to go over since the last time he sat in with us. Ryan has a bone to pick with some celebrities who are getting a little too loose proclaiming themselves as “nerds” and I’m there too to keep everyone in line. It’s safe to say we get lost in a post-Thanksgiving haze of gaming, movies, and dual-boot wizardry in this latest episode of our podcast.

Ep #00034 – Perpetual Geek Machine Podcast

pgm_show_00034
Oh man, it’s late. We’ve been playing a lot of Horde mode in Gears of War 3 tonight, and now it’s way past my bedtime. Yet, I’m here dear listeners, finishing up this post and making it live on the webs so we can download it in the morning for your drive to work. It’s me pleasure, we appreciate each and every one of you that listens to us!

Walt Disney & the 1964 World’s Fair (CD boxset)

71qzISp8XyL

In the past seven years or so my wife and I have visited Walt Disney World numerous times and I’ve made it a kind of mission to soak up as much information as I could about what went into making them. To that end I’ve watched documentaries and read tons of books on the subject. However so far I’ve only encountered one audio boxset, and while the topic of the set isn’t directly related to the parks it certainly laid the groundwork for some of the best works the parks have ever seen.

In the last episode of our podcast I gave a little history lesson/talk about the 1964 World’s Fair and Walt Disney’s involvement in it. The idea to cover it on the show stemmed from my wanted to try and spread some of the reasons why I love the topic of Disney so much, and why I consider the man a hero of mine. The podcast topic was just a glimpse, and hopefully I can find some ways to bring up interesting areas of the Disney company in future podcasts.

But today we’re here to talk about audio! Audio from the four attractions that Walt Disney produced for various companies at the fair. So, please keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times. Let’s take a look!

Ep #00033 – Perpetual Geek Machine Podcast

pgm_show_00033b
I can promise you dear listeners that when we sat down to do this show we never intended it to be so Disney filled, just turned out that way. Not that Dan is upset mind you, he could talk about that shit for hours and hours. I mean he just got back from vacationing there and discussed the changes since he had been there 2 years ago. We do think geekspew offers something new in the way of a history lesson certainly for the nerdy, and serves to maybe spread some of the interest that Dan has in the man known at one time as “Uncle Walt.”
The rest of the show as usual covers much ground, from old school sci-fi shows to tales of biker gangs. The crew also discusses the bitter end to their latest Dungeons and Dragons adventure. It’s all good stuff.

Ep #00032 – Perpetual Geek Machine Podcast

pgm_show_00032
After a few weeks of rotating lineups in the podcast we’re back to the 3 of us you know and (let’s hope) love. After I (Dan) took a one show hiatus and long Disney vacation I must say I felt a bit rusty and while I think I could’ve had a better show I’m being told no one else will feel that way.

Luckily it’s another show that’s all over the map and we talk about our new version of the site, earthquakes, crazy Japanese puzzle games, The Hitchhiker’s Guide, fixing Xboxs, some movies, some games, some theme park stuff and more!
