  • Dustforce Review

    DustForce Game Logo

I hate cleaning. It’s a tedious, dirty thing that is required if you want to keep up status as a sane person. It’s not like you can expect your friends to treat you the same when you invite them over and a year’s worth of soap scum has built up in the shower or there’s hair on the couch from three dogs ago. That sort of stuff tends to stand out. I’ll tell you what though…if cleaning was half as fun as it is in Dustforce with your ninja-like janitor, I’d be all over it.

    Weekday Replay for 1/21/12

We’ve been pretty lazy when it comes to keeping up with this post where we recap what we’ve put out there during the week. I feel it’s high time we get back to that. There’s some great stuff going on behind the scenes as well as what you see here, with more to come next week!

On Monday, Adam tells us why Fitocracy might be the geekiest way to a healthier lifestyle.

On Tuesday Dan shared some old school maps and sky charts as the latest addition to our Weekly Wallpapers.

On Wednesday Jimmy checked out one of the Lego boardgames, but is this one Heroic enough?

On Thursday we were sadly absent from posting. Shame on us.

On Friday I posted the first entry in a new site-wide project where we’re keeping track of the movies we watch this year. Feel free to join in!

For our random old post this week we want to remind you how good the card game Yomi is.

Have a great weekend everybody! We’ll see you next week with Episode #00043 of our podcast, among other things.

    Introducing Project: Movie Log 2012

    Project: Movie Log 2012

About 4 or 5 years ago myself and some fellow movie-loving coworkers decided to have a friendly contest to see who could watch the most “new to us” movies in a calendar year. We kept a blog going with short entries of our thoughts on each one and quickly found that it was a fun way to keep ourselves in search of things we hadn’t seen before. That’s why we’ve decided to do something similar this year here.

Though I plan to have a regular schedule of posts updating the log this first entry is going to serve as a sort of “catch up” for what we’ve seen already this year. We’re not just logging anything though, there’s some guidelines as to what movies are going to count towards the total:

    1. Any movie we’ve never seen before.
    2. Haven’t seen the movie in so long that we don’t remember it.
    3. There’s something unique about this particular screening of the movie.
That’s it. Them’s the “rules” to this. Hit the jump so you can find out what’s been watched so far this year.  (more…)

Heroic? Uhh…. (A Review of LEGO Heroica)

I’ve been curious about LEGO board games for a while.  They’ve been on the market for more than a year now, yet there really hadn’t been one that looked enticing enough for me to finally bite the bullet and make a purchase.  But this past fall, LEGO unveiled their Heroica line of dungeon crawl games.  “Great!,” I thought.  One of my favorite genres mixed with everyone’s favorite building blocks – what could possibly go wrong?

    As it turns out, plenty.

Weekly Wallpapers: Old school maps and sky charts

There’s something daunting about the idea that back when people began to explore how the Earth and universe worked, they needed to not only study and deduce but invent the technologies and systems in order to do it! The maps and charts from days of old not only give us a peek into the style of the day, but still even now can impart the sense of wonder of what it must’ve been like to take part in the discoveries they helped create.

Also, they look awesome. Today is another group of wallpapers for you, inspired by old maps and star charts!

Just click the images to get at the full size, then save accordingly!

BTW, we have a ton Perpetually Geeky wallpapers just waiting to be downloaded over at our Facebook page. You should totally visit us and give us a “like!”

    More after the break! (more…)

Fitocracy seems to click in my geek brain.

Here we are in the time of year that everyone are making resolutions. Just about everyone I talk to that brings up their New Year’s resolution says it is to lose weight. If that is your goal too, fitocracy.com is a site that may be able to help.

Oil and water, matter and anti-matter, geeks and working out, all these things could never be combined right? Wrong say the brains behind Fitocracy.com! Geeks can be coaxed out of basements and comic shops and into the gyms if they are given the proper incentive. These guys have merged online RPGs and physical fitness into a beta test that has gotten my ass to the gym more in the last few weeks than the previous four years altogether. (more…)

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Movie Review

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Review HeaderDavid Fincher‘s film adaptation of Stieg Larsson‘s first entry in the Millennium series, “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” is now my third roll in the hay with the same story. I read the book, I watched the excellent 2009 Swedish adaptation of the book, and I gave it another go with David Fincher’s take on it. Despite knowing exactly what was going to happen (two times anyway), this engrossing story and these memorable characters managed to come off as exhilarating, and fresh once more. That is exactly why I find it unfortunate that this movie was so criminally underwatched this past holiday season from what I’ve read, but don’t let the box office grosses fool you. This is one of the best movies of 2011, hands down. If this is your first introduction to the main character, Lisbeth Salander, you won’t be disappointed with David Fincher’s vision. (more…)

Belfort: Dwarves and Elves Working Together For Your Enjoyment

Historically, I don’t like games that don’t have dice. Back in the day, I used to “play” Dungeons and Dragons and the Marvel Super Heroes RPG…but by “play,” I mean “make characters and then not use them,” because the generation process consisted mostly of rolling dice. Whether or not that points to some sort of innate gambling problem or what, I don’t know, but that was definitely the case. The last year or two has significantly changed my feelings on this, with my introduction to, and love of, Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne.

When looking at the Tasty Minstrel Games release Belfort, I got the feeling that it might be similar to those other games I had come to love, and since other TMG games (Eminent Domain, Martian Dice, Train of Thought, Jab), had received very good reviews on this site, I was pretty psyched to give it a whirl. My anticipation did not go unrewarded.
