You know Reddit. You love Reddit. You probably know of the numerous “/r/” sub-Reddits out there for everything (Rule 35 perhaps?). As an avid fan of building my own computers the constant need to know what’s new and hot is insatiable. It’s also something that’s rather difficult to keep track of. Luckily I discovered Build A PC, it’s definitely a great crowd-sourced set of references that can help with your first or five hundredth build. Let’s take a look at what makes this little sub-Reddit so special. (more…)
-Space Invaders -Spy Hunter -Gauntlet -Joust -Tempest -Donkey Kong… Recognize them? Can you see them in your mind’s eye? Then you’ll understand what I’m trying to say.
High Score. THE High Score. Ahh the bragging rights of getting those 3 letters on the high score list. It was the pinnacle for any arcade player. It was like a calling card, a flag to proudly plant in newly attained territory. Getting on that list multiple times? Now you’re just flaunting it. DRZ was my flag. Just the 3 simple letters carried such weight back then. It was the only real measure of success in arcade games. Each player’s was unique. Posting a high score and watching other players try to best it, that was the pastime. That and taking a run at someone else’s score. (There was an entire episode of Seinfeld about it.)
We spent our young lives in dark arcades, spending so much time there we knew every seam in the carpet, every cigarette burn in the cabinets. We knew which machines needed to have that damn fire button that always seem to get stuck at the worst possible time fixed. We knew which machines rejected your quarter while also giving you a credit.
To grow up during what is now referred to as the “Golden Age of Video Games” was a special thing indeed. (more…)

Imagine taking your favorite fighting game and making it a card game, wouldn’t that be awesome? Well, you don’t have to do a shred of work to make that possibility a reality cause Sirlin games already has it covered with the competitive card fighting game Yomi.
Yomi means “reading” in Japanese, as in to read your opponent, and that’s pretty much the main mantra of the game. Anticipate your opponent to set up dodges, throws and attacks to drain them of hit points. There are super moves, power ups, combos, the works.
In addition to all that Yomi is also one more thing actually – it’s one of the best games I’ve played this year… easily. Let’s take a look at how it all works.

It’s a story as old as time: lemmings are born, raised, and – at some point in their life cycle – decide to jump off a cliff along with their buddies in a spectacle of mass suicide that would put Jonestown to shame. But here’s the thing – it’s just not true. Knowing this, the fine folks at a research lab in Montana have spent millions to breed and race a suicidal strain of lemming, so that they can be raced to their death to settle a $20 bet. We like to call this “science.”

Kickstarter is a site where you can post up something you’d like to create but lack the funds to start-up. Other users act as venture capitalists, and can fund the project with small amounts of cash. If the project gets enough backers to reach it’s goal, then you pay the amount you promised. It’s a great way for people to make their ideas a reality.
For the first spotlight we looked at the dexterity based game PongCano and we followed that up with the tabletop RPG hopeful Age Past. This time for Kickstarter spotlight we’re going to shift gears away from the games and into another area near and dear to the geek’s heart… comics!
Guerillas is a comic book about chimps that walk around wearing army fatigues carrying weapons through the jungles of Vietnam during the war. Sure, it’s about a lot more than that, but that image alone no doubt roped you in to want to learn more… right? This week’s spotlight is in an interesting situation, as it was successfully funded between the time the interview was done and this post went up. So first and foremost, GRATZ to Brahm and to his comic! Good news is you can still back it to get some great rewards and to ensure the projects keep moving past Vol.2 so get over to his Kickstarter page and pony up a few bucks!
And if you love this idea, go buy a copy of Guerillas Vol. 1. Now, let’s learn about Guerillas and the man behind it all.
