Let’s Play! Seven Dragons the Card Game (review)

We’re big fans of Looney Labs round these parts. There’s something refreshing about simple fun to play card games. It also doesn’t hurt that the company obviously loves what it does, and that love bleeds through to all the products they release.

Primarily known for their line of Fluxx games (we’ve reviewed both Martian Fluxx and Pirate Fluxx here before) they made waves this year with their Back to the Future card game which actually just won an award at Origins and is based on their inventive Chrononauts game system.

Seven Dragons is completely different from all those other games however. Featuring big beautiful artwork and a simple game mechanic, it’s low price point makes is a perfect inclusion in just about every game collection.

So, with that said, let’s play some Seven Dragons!

Let’s Play! Battleship Express (boardgame review)

When it comes to brand name American board games, there seems to be two schools of thought on how to pump out more products that cash in on the popularity of a decades old franchise.  You can either pair an existing game with a popular license (Super Mario Yahtzee, Monopoly: Spongebob Squarepants), or you can take that popular brand name and slap it on a game that has nothing to do with the original product.  Such is the case with Battleship Express.

There are boats in Battleship Express.  It’s a strange observation to make, I know – but I point this out because, with that single solitary exception, this game nothing in common with Battleship.  Zero.  Zip. Bupkiss.

    Kickstarter Spotlight: Age Past (RPG)

Kickstarter is a site where you can post up something you’d like to create but lack the funds to start-up. Other users act as venture capitalists, and can fund the project with small amounts of cash. If the project gets enough backers to reach it’s goal, then you pay the amount you promised. It’s a great way for people to make their ideas a reality.

This week we’re taking a look at the Tabletop RPG game “Age Past.” I was super impressed by the undertaking of creating an entirely new RPG game system. Not just art (though that looks great), not just new books (of which a few are currently planned), but a whole new dice system as well which they’re calling Elegant 10. I really think that’s a fantastic name by the way. The game looks to be shaping up nicely, and if the quality of the art is anything to go by then we’re in for quite a treat when the game is all done! So to learn more about what goes into an undertaking like this I did a little interview with the man behind the project.

So without further adieu, let’s learn a little bit about the RPG game “Age Past.”

Let’s Play! Who Would Win? (review)

It’s a game that most nerds have been taking part in for their entire lives without realizing it. It usually starts with a benign but ridiculous question like “Who would win in a fight, George Clooney’s character in From Dusk Till Dawn or Han Solo?” Or whatever, there are literally an infinite number of combinations out there. What then happens is an all too in-depth debate about the ins and outs of the battle and who would clearly win.

I can vividly remember a large group of friends very recently getting into a much heated argument about who was the better comic book hero, Batman or Superman (clearly it’s Batman). Voices were raised, movies/comics/tv shows were cited as evidence and sometimes accepted, sometimes discarded. Clearly we’re the target audience for a game that takes that concept and adds scoring to it.

It was probably only a matter of time before someone took this typical debate setup and turned it into a game, and Gamewrigh has done it. In Who Would Win? you’ll debate your friends to decide which famous people/characters would win in various silly competitions.
